Euripides
Greek tragic poet, the third of the great tragedians after Aeschylus and Sophocles, who lived from 480 to 406 BC, of whom nineteen tragedies survive.
Profile
Euripides is recalled by Statius in Purgatorio among the Greek poets cited after Homer. The note to verse 106 specifies that, after the five Latin poets, some Greek poets are named, five with Homer, and that Dante, of him as of the three other Greek poets cited there, could have known only the name, read in the Latin authors known to him, such as Cicero and Quintilian, or in Aristotle, who cites all four. Euripides is placed by Dante in Limbo: the note to verse 103 of the same canto in fact clarifies that the poets are found "nel primo cinghio" of Hell, "detto cieco carcere", that is, in Limbo, where already in Inferno IV 86-8 Homer had been acknowledged as the greatest among the poets.
