The Cappelletti are mentioned by Sordello da Goito in Purgatorio among the great Lombard houses that took part in the struggles between the imperial and anti-imperial factions. The exegetical note to Canto VI clarifies that, together with the Montecchi of Verona, the Cappelletti of Cremona were the nuclei around which the opposing sides gathered, and that their names took on an emblematic value, encompassing also the other Ghibelline and Guelf families that supported the conflict.
