Bonifazio

Bonifazio dei Fieschi, Archbishop of Ravenna and papal legate in Romagna, recalled by Forese among the gluttons of Purgatory.

Profile

Bonifazio belonged to the Fieschi family, Counts of Lavagna, and was Archbishop of Ravenna from 1274 to 1294, as well as papal legate in Romagna. The authorized note describes him as a man who was above all political, holding many important positions. In Purgatory, Forese names him alongside Ubaldin da la Pila in the catalogue of the purging gluttons, and the commentary note to verse 29 associates him with the group with smiling irony, letting it be understood that he too, like the others, was known for gluttony. The text therefore places him among the penitents of the sixth circle, exposed to the punishment of hunger and thirst.
