Tagliamento
The Tagliamento is a river that, together with the Adige, delimits the Marca Trevigiana to the east in Paradiso IX, line 44.
Description
In Canto IX of the Paradiso, within the discourse of Cunizza addressed to Dante, the Tagliamento is mentioned in pair with the Adige as a geographical element which, together with the Piave and the Brenta recalled earlier, serves to delimit the Marca Trevigiana. Line 44 indicates that the two rivers enclose the region, with the Tagliamento to the east and the Adige to the west. The critical note specifies that the verb 'richiude' (encloses) is agreed with a single subject by grammatical convention, although it refers to both watercourses. The citation is inserted in the prophetic and admonitory part of the blessed woman's discourse, where the people of the Marca are rebuked for no longer aspiring to earthly fame.
