Sestri
Sestri is the place name indicated in Purgatorio XIX, v. 100 to denote the point where the coast lowers between Sestri and Chiaveri, in the context of the episode of Pope Adrian V.
Description
In verse 100 of canto XIX of the Purgatorio Dante places the place name in a topographical comparison: «Intra Sïestri e Chiaveri s'adima» ("Between Sestri and Chiaveri it slopes down"), referring to the profile of the land that lowers between Sestri and Chiaveri, localities situated to the east of the Ligurian capital. The place name recurs in the cornice where the Genoese pope Adrian V, of the Fieschi family, counts of Lavagna, presents himself as «successor Petri» (successor of Peter) and invokes the pilgrim's prayer for his expiation. The note to the canto points out that the mention is inserted within the context of the pope's recollection of places and relatives, on the Ligurian Riviera of Levante, between Genoa and Lavagna.
