Description
In Paradiso XIX, Dante places Norway among the European kingdoms whose sovereigns are reproached by a blessed soul for having dishonored their own lineage and their own crowns. Verse 139 explicitly names Norway alongside Portugal, within a survey of kings that also includes the kings of Aragon, Rascia, and Bulgaria. The note to verse 139 identifies the king of Norway contemporary with Dante as Haakon V, who reigned from 1299 to 1319. The critical notes point out that the ancient commentators had no information about this sovereign, nor do we know where Dante drew his information from.
