Nocera and Gualdo

Description

In Paradise XI, among the blessed who sing praises to God, Dante recalls with a periphrasis the Umbrian castles of Nocera and Gualdo, grouped with many other centers of the region as places burdened by a harsh yoke, in contrast to the lightness of the saints who assist them. The mention is part of the praise of Saint Francis, sung by Saint Dominic as an example of seraphic ardor and cherubic splendor. The broad geographical introduction to the life of the saint starts from the rivers Tupino and Chiascio and from Mount Subasio to designate the land of origin, within which Nocera and Gualdo are called back as poles of a political oppression that only sainthood can alleviate.
