Description

In Purgatorio, in Canto XVIII, Corrado da Palazzo points to Corradino of Swabia as the one who, in 1268, after the defeat of Tagliacozzo, was handed over to Charles of Anjou and beheaded. Milan continues to speak of this event with sorrow, as a sign of the recent mourning provoked by that death. The note to the canto also recalls the dramatic story of Iacopo del Cassero, who, precisely while traveling in 1298 to the podesteria of Milan, was murdered by the assassins of Marquis Azzo VIII d'Este, who was hostile to the podestà. A further connection with the city passes through Corrado, a Florentine but identified as "da Palazzo," a branch of the Ghibelline family that ruled the Val di Pesa and was tied to the Visconti of Milan.
