Mercabò Castle
Marcabò is mentioned by a damned soul in the eighth ditch as the geographical extreme toward which, according to him, the terrain slopes between Vercelli and that point (Inf. XXVIII, 75).
Description
In canto XXVIII of the Inferno, a sinner in the ninth ditch urges Dante to remember him among the living, describing in nostalgic terms his own land, indicated as 'terra latina,' that is, Italy, with that note of longing that preludes the verses immediately following. The memory of his homeland translates into a precise geographical image: the ground, in his words, 'da Vercelli a Marcabò dichina' ('slopes from Vercelli to Marcabò'). The name thus appears as one of the extremes of this ideal line that crosses the Po Valley plain, cited by the damned soul within the context of the sowers of discord who here pay the penalty for their actions.
