Nostra Donna is the name by which Dante designates the Adriatic shore, that is, the beach of Ancona, where the Virgin is venerated as patron and protector of the port.
Description
In canto XXI of Paradiso, at verse 123, Dante recalls the prayer addressed to the Virgin on the Adriatic beach, designating her with the title Nostra Donna. The expression di Nostra Donna in sul lito adriano places the memory on the shore of the Adriatic Sea, in a place of Marian devotion connected to the port. The memory of that invocation is set within the context of the paradisiacal cantica, among the blessed souls surrounding Dante. The reference to the lito adriano confirms the deep-rooted devotion to the Virgin along that stretch of coast, already perceived by Dante as a sacred space protected by the Madonna.
