Marseille
Marseille is the birthplace of the troubadour Folchetto, mentioned in cantos IX and XVIII of Purgatorio for the slaughter carried out by Brutus in its harbor and for the siege that stung its inhabitants.
Description
In canto IX of Purgatorio Folchetto indicates Marseille as his own birthplace, situated almost on the same meridian as Bougie, and recalls that one day its harbor was flooded with the blood of its defenders, massacred by Brutus, Caesar's lieutenant, during the civil war of 43 B.C. The episode of the slaughter in the harbor, drawn from Lucan, is recalled again by Folchetto in canto XVIII, where an warlike event is alluded to that «stung Marseille», driving its action afterward toward Spain. The note to canto IX also notes the presence of Folchetto of Marseille alongside Domenico in the campaign against the Albigensians, as a political and military guide of the crusade in Provence.
