Jehoshaphat

Description

The name Jehoshaphat appears in Inferno X, v. 11, where it indicates the valley near Jerusalem in which, according to Scripture, the Last Judgment will take place. Dante uses it as a metaphorical image of the sepulchres in which the bodies of the damned will return after the final resurrection. The place is thus closely tied to the eschatological theme of the return of bodies to their tombs, a constant in Dante's afterlife, and foreshadows the calling up of the philosophers who denied the immortality of the soul, a theme at the center of the same canto.
