Piazza di Siena, the site of the Palazzo del Comune, still called today piazza del Campo and referred to by the Sienese simply as «il Campo».
Description
The Campo of Siena is the square where the Palazzo del Comune stands. It is indicated in the note to canto XI of the Purgatorio as the place identified in the Dante tradition, with the name that is still today piazza del Campo and that is called by the Sienese simply «il Campo». The reference appears in the passage in which it is recalled how, in that place, a character openly humbled himself to free his friend from suffering, with a fully free and spontaneous act.
