Bismantova
Rock of the Apennines in the Reggio area cited by Dante in the Purgatorio as an example of a steep and difficult-to-climb mountain.
Description
In the fourth canto of the Purgatorio Dante mentions Bismantova in a comparison between real places and the steep ascent of purgatory: «montasi su in Bismantova e 'n Cacume», to indicate a mountain that is difficult to climb. The notes to the canto accompany this passage with references to the rocky landscape surrounding the two wayfarers and to the theme of the solitude of the journey. The note to verse 25 recalls other Italian examples of arduous ascents, among them San Leo, a small town in the duchy of Urbino situated on top of a very steep hill.
