Aguglione
Aguglione is a village in the Florentine countryside recalled by Cacciaguida as the southern limit of ancient Florence, alongside Signa.
Description
In Canto XVI of Paradiso, Cacciaguida lists the boundaries of the Florence of his time to demonstrate how much the city's population had later grown and become mixed with people from the countryside. Aguglione appears as one of the two villages which, together with Signa, marked the limit to the south. The verses present the name in the form «villan d'Aguglione», with reference to an inhabitant of the village. The authorized notes to the passage itself also document an episode of Florentine corruption in 1299 involving Baldo Aguglioni, showing how the family linked to this village was present in the political life of the Commune.
