Acone

Description

Acone is the name of the pieve in the Val di Sieve cited by Cacciaguida in Paradiso XVI 65, where it is recalled that the Cerchi, a family of rural origins later risen to power in Florence as leaders of the White faction, were still resident in that ecclesiastical district at the time of their ancestor. The note to the verse explains that the pieve (or pievania) was the ecclesiastical district that grouped multiple parishes under a pieve. The name Acone also recurs in the notes to Paradiso XIX 139, where it refers to a king of Norway of the same name, who is, however, distinct from the Tuscan toponym of the same name.
