Minos, the whirlwind, and Paolo and Francesca
Guide to the canto
Having descended into the second circle, Dante and Virgil find Minos at the entrance: the judge examines each soul, hears the confession of the fault, and assigns the ring by wrapping his tail. Once past the judge, a lightless place opens up, where a violent wind drags the souls for eternity. Here the true Hell of punishments begins: the first impact is aural, a roaring that covers everything.
Whom we meet
Minos pauses his office to warn Dante, but Virgil stops him, reaffirming the will of heaven. Virgil quickly names the illustrious lustful: Semiramis, Cleopatra, Dido, Helen, Achilles, Paris, and Tristan. From that band only Paolo and Francesca detach themselves—the first damned souls with whom Dante truly speaks. Francesca recounts the reading of Lancelot and the kiss that led them to death.
What to expect
After Francesca's account, Dante faints and falls like a dead body: it is the first true physical collapse of the journey, a sign of how overwhelming pity can be for the pilgrim. The question of how to judge those who loved without measure remains open, and Virgil will have to recall the pace so that the descent can continue toward the third circle.
