The Gate, the Neutrals, and Charon
Guide to the canto
We are inside Hell, before the gate bearing the inscription that condemns those who enter. The air is dark, filled with lamentation and sighs: here dwell the neutrals. The conflict is no longer the fear of setting out, but the dismay before a place without time or stars.
Whom we meet
Charon, the old ferryman with a white beard and eyes of flame, who gathers the damned souls and ferries them across Acheron. Among the neutrals appears the shade of he who made through cowardice the great refusal, traditionally identified with Pilate. Virgil guides Dante, reassures him, and imposes his will upon Charon.
What to expect
After Dante's fainting, the journey will enter the first circle, among the damned who sinned in measure. The question remains open as to what awaits him once the river has been crossed.
