Falsifiers of person and of coin
Guide to the canto
Dante is still on the bridge of the last ditch, at the bottom of Malebolge. The scene is dominated by an unbearable stench and by deformed bodies that tear at one another. The conflict is not only visual: the poet lets himself be drawn into a quarrel among the damned until he forgets time and his guide. It is here that Virgil reproaches him harshly, marking a shift in the relationship between the two.
Whom we meet
Gianni Schicchi enters the scene, having bitten Capocchio, along with master Adamo, the dropsical counterfeiter who asks only for a drink. Griffolino names Myrrha, who falsified herself by assuming another form. At the edge of the field, lying inert, appear Potiphar's wife and the Greek Sinon, with whom Adamo engages in a furious brawl. The encounter with Sinon is new and carries weight: he is the face of the liar par excellence.
What to expect
After the rebuke, Dante understands that listening to the disputes of the damned is a dangerous distraction. From here onward the journey draws near the central pit, where the giants await him. The question accompanying the reader is whether the poet will be able to keep his attention on his guide rather than on the particulars of the punishment.
